LAC DPH COVID-19 Vaccine Update: Vaccination for Children and Homebound Persons May 13, 2021 ACIP, Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, CDC, COVID-19, emergency use authorization, FDA, LA County, LAC DPH, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, Pfizer-BioNTech 1461 COVID-19 Vaccination of Individuals Age 12 and Over The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted unanimously on May 12 to recommend the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for persons 12-15 years. The CDC recommends that this vaccine be used among 12 to 15 year olds, and providers may begin vaccinating them right away. On May 10, the FDA issued an amendment to the emergency use authorization (EUA) for the use of the Pfizer vaccine for the prevention of COVID-19 in this population. Included in the updated CDC recommendations is that co-administration of COVID-19 vaccine with other vaccines is no longer discouraged. CDC states that COVID-19 vaccines and other vaccines may now be administered without regard to timing. This includes simultaneous administration of COVID-19 vaccines and other vaccines on the same day, as well as co-administration within 14 days. This is an important step to ensure adolescents 12 years and up presenting for a COVID-19 vaccine are able to catch-up on other immunizations they may have missed during the pandemic. The CDC is in the process of updating their COVID-19 vaccine clinical considerations and other materials for providers and patients and will be releasing an MMWR this Friday on the ACIP recommendations. The CDC is hosting a live webinar for healthcare providers: What Clinicians Need to Know About Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccination of Adolescents this Friday, May 14, 11am-12pm PST: webinar details. New materials for providers and patients will be posted on the LAC DPH Provider COVID-19 Vaccination Hub.
