Bretan, Jr., M.D., issued the following statement in response to Governor Newsom's revised budget proposal: "On behalf of the nearly 50,000 physicians, residents and medical student members of the California Medical Association, we are encouraged by another state budget that prioritizes health care and expands health care coverage for California residents. As a part of the Governor’s May Revision, CMA commends the Governor for eliminating the threat of suspension of funding for the Proposition 56 supplemental payments." Kids and Vaccines The Los Angeles school district is launching an ambitious campaign to vaccinate 12- to 15-year-old students before the end of the current school year that will reach 250 campuses, Supt. Austin Beutner announced Monday. The goal is to reach eligible students before they leave campus for the summer, helping to pave the way for a fall semester in which as many children as possible will have maximum protection from COVID-19. LACMA is participating in a community vaccination drive at Cathedral High School this Wednesday, May 19th. If you would like to volunteer contact me: gustavo@lacmanet.org. Patient Data On April 5th, a federal rule went into effect that requires health care providers to give patients electronic access to their health information without delay upon request, at no cost. Many patients may now find their doctors’ clinical notes, test results and other medical data posted to their electronic portal as soon as they are available. Advocates herald the rule as a long-awaited opportunity for patients to control their data and health. Palisades Fires Our thoughts are with those impacted by the Palisades fire. About 1,000 people remained under mandatory evacuation and hundreds more were told to prepare to leave on Sunday afternoon as firefighters for a third day battled the fire, which by late afternoon had spread to 1,325 acres with zero containment. Helicopters continued to conduct water-dropping operations while firefighters worked on the ground in steep, difficult terrain. No injuries or damage to homes were reported. If any members are impacted and need assistance, please contact me: gustavo@lacmanet.org.
