Monday Rx | July 22, 2019 | Docs4LA - Healthcare, Homelessness, and Historic MLK Jr. Community Hospital Partnership. July 21, 2019 2019 Los Angeles Healthcare Awards, 2019 Nepo Summit, athenahealth, City of Hope, docs4la, Healthcare, homelessness, Monday RX, Preferred Partners, symposium, WestPac 1421 Healthcare and Homelessness in California Plenty to share in spite of the season. Dr. Sion Roy, LACMA’s new president, hit the ground running with several meetings with key legislators to talk about healthcare in California and specifically Los Angeles County. From a positive discussion with state Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon including collaboration on anti-vaping and sugary drink reductions to a meeting at the epicenter of the Los Angeles homeless crisis as we met with leaders from Skid Row Housing Trust, a 30-year-old non profit with $1B in assets who builds affordable and sustainable housing for the chronically homeless. We then met with Adrin Nazarian, Assemblyman 46th District, who shared his views on vaccines, specifically AB 276 (Pan) that would require the California Department of Public Health to review and potentially reject any child’s medical exemption if they attend a school or daycare with immunization rates of less than 95%. Approximately 20% of schools and daycares would currently fall under that scrutiny. Mr. Nazarian suggests not creating an expensive and broad new bureaucracy within the Department of Public Health and questioned the need for the bill with so few actual measles cases in a state with 40 million people. I’d like to hear from you and share your thoughts with both Dr. Pan and Assemblyman Nazarian. ________________________________________________________ Historic Membership Partnership This week also marks a historic gathering as we celebrate the membership partnership with Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital Medical Foundation. The five-year agreement calls for every newly employed physician to be automatically made a member of LACMA. Dr. Sion Roy, Dr. C Freeman and I will be joined by Dr. Elaine Batchlor, CEO of MLK Community Hospital and Dr. John Fisher, Chief Medical Officer, as well as physicians, legislators and Jonathan Barrera with Westpac Wealth Partners, who made the evening possible thanks to a generous sponsorship. ________________________________________________________ Apply For The Patient Care Foundation's Scholarship Program Since 2008, The Patient Care Foundation's scholarship program has provided financial assistance to 50 medical students.
