The Hiroshima International Council for the Care of the Radiation-Exposed (HICARE) is inviting radiation oncologists from Southern California to attend a five-day educational program in Hiroshima, Feb. 18-22. This course on Advanced Radiation Therapy will be conducted with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), bringing together top researchers and clinicians from around the world. HICARE will pay all expenses for two Southern California radiation oncologists who would like to attend.

Since 2013, the Institute for Medical Leadership has partnered with HICARE as its U.S. West Coast liaison, sending 24 physicians to nine HICARE programs. C Freeman, MD, LACMA president, attended a recent program and found it to be a very worthwhile experience both from an educational and a social perspective.

"Every physician should take advantage of the HICARE unique medical cultural immersion experience, which provides a new way of thinking about the impact of environmental factors on physical and mental health, and increases one's understanding of the need to incorporate a cultural perspective and develop different approaches to the achievement of treatment goals," said Dr. Freeman.

All attendees of HICARE programs have reported back that they had an incredible experience, one never to be forgotten. They learned a great deal from the HICARE experts. They have been able to pass on much of this information to colleagues at their home institutions in the U.S. through lectures and small group round-table discussions.

Some have referred colleagues for future training. The attendees were also very appreciative of the cordial manner in which they were welcomed by their Japanese hosts. Many commented that the international nature of their classes was very impressive, and in its own right very educational.
