First Healthcare Burnout Symposium Update

Even with tumultuous and some would say historical weather conditions, nearly 300 attended the first Healthcare Burnout Symposium this past week at the UCLA Luskin Conference Center.  As I’ve been sharing over the course of 4 months, we kicked things off with a chief wellness officer dinner and sold-out pre-event workshops followed by 40 speakers, live remote with HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, a unique physician-led gun panel discussion featuring national experts Dr. Babak Sarani, Dr. Joe Sakran and LACMA president Dr. Omer Deen and closing remarks by California Surgeon General, Dr. Diana Ramos.  A debt of gratitude to event co-chairs, Dr. Jeffery Lee and Dr. Hector Flores, the ICD Events team, led by Bill Doherty, and the LACMA team for making this event a success on a variety of levels, from addressing the issues of burnout with real solutions, offering registration at significantly discounted rate and CMEs and providing on-demand content from the event for those who could not attend (to be available in a few weeks.)

I also wanted to thank the chief wellness officers for attending our successful kick-off dinner event and for responding to our survey.  Special kudos to City of Hope’s Dr. Clarke Anderson for receiving the first “Wellness Can’t Wait” Award for outstanding, proven, and measured commitment to excellence in healthcare professional well-being.  Congrats City of Hope!

Medical Practice Makeover: Physician Support

LACMA's Medical Practice Makeover Initiative is more than a slogan. It’s a promise to small, independent medical practices that meet certain criteria, that help is on the way. In 2022, a total of 20 practices received $5,000 grants along with robust resources, PPE supplies and a practice assessment. The success of the program in its first year demonstrated the need to extend the Medical Practice Initiative into 2023. 

For 2023, a total of $50,000 will be awarded to practices, with 3 winners announced each quarter - 2 new awardees and 1 returning awardee. New awardees will receive $5,000 and past winners who re-apply and win will receive $2,500. The deadline for Quarter 1 is March 3, 2023.

The 152nd Elections

We are holding our 152nd Annual Election this coming June. There are vacancies on the LACMA Board of Directors and the LACMA Delegation to the CMA House of Delegates. Active members of LACMA and CMA have the privilege of voting for their preferred candidates.
