MONDAY RX | JUNE 24, 2019 | WHAT AN INSTALLATION! June 25, 2019 Docs 4 LA, Installation, LACMA, Member Resource, Monday RX, President 1165 Wow, what an Installation! On behalf of LACMA's staff and leadership, we thank you for joining us at the 148th Installation of President and Officers, honoring Sion Roy, MD. With almost 200 guests in attendance, Dr. Roy was sworn in, making him the youngest and first county employed physician to hold the title as President in LACMA's history. We are thankful to those who shared their sentiments and comments on stage and we are grateful for the enthusiasm surrounding his presidency. Senator Henry Stern, Councilmember Paul Koretz, Dr. Patrice A. Harris, and Dr. David Aizuss were some of the special guests who played a special role in welcoming Dr. Roy and attendees had the privilege of hearing from Reverend Janet McKiethen who led the prayer. I would like to extend thanks to our LACMA board, district leaders, committee chairs, friends, and colleagues for attending. We are truly grateful to our sponsors who made the night possible with their generous contributions. Companies such as the Cooperative of American Physicians (CAP), Wells Fargo, Black Patients Matter, WestPac Wealth Partners, Mercer, City of Hope, PatientPop, L.A. Care Health Plan and Synergistic Systems all gave generously. This initiative will provide LACMA the impetus to weigh in on the topical issues of our community and county. Through Docs 4 LA, we will address issues that impact our own lives, as well as the healthcare outcomes of our patients in this highly populated, vibrant, and complex county. Through Docs 4 LA, we will look to help our public servants develop policies that help our housing and transportation crisis, find solutions to environmental issues, and help address gun violence. When policymakers look to find community leaders to help lead and build coalitions, we want them to think of LACMA. Through Docs 4 LA, LACMA physicians will be leaders on issues and in spaces where we haven’t traditionally weighed in. Docs 4 LA physicians will not only help their communities on policy issues but they will also help through community service. We will recommit to helping our patients through events like Walk with a Doc and other community service events. More details will be shared in the coming months. Update: Assembly Bill 407 Assembly Bill 407 by Assemblymember Santiago (D-Los Angeles) is being heard in the Senate Committee on Business, Professions and Economic Development. This bill authorizes a physician and surgeon, or a doctor of podiatric medicine, who works in a setting that complies with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Conditions for Coverage (CfC) relating to radiation safety, to provide fluoroscopy services without a fluoroscopy permit or certification. While other states require training, nothing amounts to the burden in California. The permit certification is overseen by the Radiologic Health Branch of the California Department of Public Health. The process to take and pass the test is cumbersome, requiring letters by mail, and a 45 day wait time after taking the test to receive results. This certification is the most onerous in the nation and results in patients not having the benefit in surgery or requiring more doctors to join the surgery, which adds to delays and costs in operations. That means that doctors who move to California and want to start their practice may have a delay of up to six months before they can use fluoroscopy in surgery. For these reasons, the Los Angeles County Medical Association supports AB 407. Resident Fair Schedule We still have several Resident Fairs taking place.
