Monday Rx | March 26th, 2018 | LACMA Celebrates You! March 27, 2018 Monday RX 1110 National Doctors' Day In just a few days, communities across the country will celebrate National Doctors' Day on Friday, March 30th. The first Doctors' Day observance was March 30, 1933 in Winder, Georgia. Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, decided to set aside a day to honor physicians. On March 30, 1958, a Resolution Commemorating Doctors' Day was adopted by the United States House of Representatives. In 1990, legislation was introduced in the House and Senate to establish a national Doctors' Day. Following overwhelming approval by the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, on October 30, 1990, President George Bush signed S.J. RES. #366 (which became Public Law 101-473) designating March 30th as "National Doctors' Day." I would like to recognize physicians, throughout the County and State, who are relentless champions for their patients, who work countless hours to save lives, and who are advancing the science of medicine every day. I would also like to salute the physician members and leaders who draft, support and fight the very legislation that is proposed in our Capitol every day, all in favor of building healthier communities, and ensuring access to care and fair payment for providers. On behalf of the LACMA staff, I thank you for your dedication to your profession and to your patients and all that you do to serve our communities. We are equally as dedicated to serving you and celebrating your heroism every day. On the Legislative Front On the legislative and health policy front, a lot is happening. CMA met with physician leaders who sit on the Council on Legislation to determine the policy agenda for the year on behalf of members-official positions will be available after April 18; For this year's special elections, leaders from LACMA's Political Action Committee have been meeting with candidates running for Senate and Assembly seats to determine who will best serve the needs of the medical community. Last but not least, CMA's annual legislative advocacy day is coming up on April 18. LACMA members will meet privately with local legislators to discuss healthcare issues affecting their communities. Learn more here. We are also arranging a host of local meetings with key elected officials. If you are interested in meeting with your local legislator on a specific issue, please email me at gustavo@lacmanet.org. Please see the most recent update on potential universal healthcare legislation here. As we enter the 2nd quarter of what has been a tumultuous year for our communities and country, one very powerful trend is re-emerging and that is the ability for groups to organize, unite, make their message heard, and ensure that the right steps are taken to influence positive change. I encourage all members to get involved, speak up and drive membership-physicians are stronger together. Thank you! I would like to recognize everyone who attended the Saving Private Practice Consortium 2.0 almost one month ago. We are still receiving great feedback from the 100+ physicians about their experiences-what they liked and what they did not like, but the bottom line is that almost all attendees got help from top industry experts who participated that day. As promising as that feedback is, we know we have more to do and I am committed to ensuring that the same value is delivered not just on one day, but every day. I would like to thank Dr. Regina L. Edmond and Dr. Luis Gomez Villalobos, both who joined LACMA and CMA on the spot and who have already provided great testimony about the value of membership. Dr. Regina L. Edmond is a private practice gynecologist and obstetrician in West Hollywood, California and Dr. Villalobos is an internal medicine physician who helps patients with chronic medical conditions to reduce or eliminate Rx drugs safely in his private practice.
