Monday Rx | May 14th, 2018 May 16, 2018 Monday RX 889 This past weekend, LACMA, in partnership with the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, hosted a young physician mixer and welcomed over 100 physicians, residents and medical students from all over LA County. I am consistently inspired when I see the next generation of physicians wanting to take an active role and learn about our efforts to protect doctors and patients. Many are not familiar with LACMA and CMA, but are quick to realize that our members represent a collective power and unity crucial to the future of medicine. I applaud our Young Physician Committee members who are working hard to recruit and cultivate the next generation of LACMA physicians. Physicians as Influencers The credibility of our members' voices goes a long way and when you speak on behalf of organized medicine, others take note and listen. That credibility comes from a legacy of strong physician leaders who have actively participated in policy decisions and been at the table to oppose threatening and dangerous regulations and advocate for what is best for physicians and patients. That legacy continues this year as Dr. C. Freeman is sworn in as, not only the first African American President, but first African American female President of LACMA on June 21st. Later this year, we will celebrate the inauguration of Dr. David H. Aizuss, a LACMA Past President, as the new President of the California Medical Association. As LACMA makes history, we should understand that taking control of medicine requires an active role from all physicians, regardless of specialty or mode of practice, to enter leadership positions, whether it be in your own hospital, health system, professional organization, or local community. For physicians to make change, they need to lead the change. I am pleased that LACMA now has a platform to help physicians train for high-profile leadership positions. If you are interested in growing into a leadership role, please join us for the May 31st Health Care Executives of Southern California and LACMA Joint Program: "Bridging the Chasm from Clinician to C-Suite Executive: The Physician's Journey into Healthcare Administration." LACMA has a few tickets available if you would like to participate as our guest, free of charge. See below for more information. Additional Ways to Get Involved There are many other ways to get involved as a physician leader. The California Medical Association's (CMA) Board of Trustees is currently seeking applications or nominations for members interested and willing to serve on CMA's councils and committees for 2018-19. Thanks to our partners at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Heath, you can watch this webinar, earn CME and learn more about becoming an effective healthcare advocate by leveraging different communication techniques and organizing strategies to promote healthy communities. Last, but not least, LACMA's 2018 elections are currently underway. You will receive more information via email this week about the candidates vying for important roles on our our board. It is crucial that you take a moment to learn more about the positions and VOTE for the leaders you think will be most effective in leading this organization. I would like to take a moment to recognize and thank all of our members who have taken some kind of active role, no matter how large or small, in organized medicine. Whether it is letting me know what your concerns are, holding a leadership position, participating in an educational meeting or event, or staying on top of the issues, your membership demonstrates a tremendous commitment to your profession. Deadline for ACO Enrollment now Extended to June 19th! National ACO, is a Next Generation Accountable Care Organization (ACO), which helps physician participants and affiliates with tools to improve guidance of healthcare, chronic disease coordination and preventive care decisions, for their Medicare Fee-for-Service patients. The Next Generation Model is evaluated on its ability to deliver better care for individuals, better health for populations, and lower growth expenditures. The deadline for enrollment has been extended to June 19th. The deadline is a CMS requirement for NACO to send a list for potential providers to participate in the upcoming Performance Year (PY) 2019. During this time, CMS will check provider eligibility on PECOS and CMS integrity lists. Additionally, CMS will review the providers' billing and coding data to determine a preliminary attribution patient list for PY 2019. Since NACO is a performance-based ACO, it selects physicians who participate through IPAs, medical groups, and associations. LACMA/CMA provides organizational oversight and value-added services that enhance quality performance through the Next Gen ACO Model of care.
