Rising Star of Physician Leadership Award – Laura Halpin, MD

RISING STAR OF PHYSICIAN LEADERSHIP AWARD

The Rising Star of Physician Leadership Award Recognizes physicians in training for their role as an advocate for organized medicine and a leader in medicine

Introduction:

Laura E Halpin MD, PhD is a psychiatric resident at the UCLA Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences. She graduated summa cum laude from The University of Toledo with a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Chemistry. She completed her Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences with a concentration in Neuroscience in 2013.  The focus of Dr. Halpin's research was the neurotoxicity and peripheral organ damage produced by methamphetamine.  In addition to her research, Dr. Halpin has held numerous leadership positions at The University of Toledo. As an undergraduate, she served as a member of numerous organizations including Student Government. As a medical and graduate student she was a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society and has served as a member of the College of Medicine and Life Sciences Student Conduct and Ethics Committee, as well as the Student Health and Wellness Center Advisory Board.  Already an advocate for physician health during medical school, she developed programming to address the stigma associated with mental illness in medical students and other medical professionals.  Outside of The University of Toledo, Dr. Halpin was and continues to be also involved with the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association. Currently, she is a resident APA delegate to the AMA and a Resident councilor on the CMA Board of Directors.

Criteria for the Rising Star Award:

  • Candidates must be a physician-in-training
  • Candidates must demonstrate a genuine interest in organized medicine which is reflected in his or her experiences and/or positions
  • Candidates must actively participate in various organized medicine activities during medical school or residency
  • Candidates must demonstrate strong leadership skills in advocacy, public policy, physician health, community service and/or medical education
